Reflections Of The Rex Theatre

Reflections of the Rex Theatre

I was shooting a time-lapse video of the Rex Theatre on November 12, 2016 when I noticed how nice the reflection of the Rex looked in the Visitor's Center window. After I had finished the time-lapse shots, I quickly grabbed this photo.

Roy's Sunset

Roy's Sunset

A photograph of Roy's Diamond Center on Main Street, Galax, VA taken at sunset during a walk around town on August 11, 2016. It was a spectacular sunset that afternoon and I just happened to be at the right place at the right time.

Smoke on the Mountain

I was walking up Main Street during the annual Smoke on the Mountain BBQ Festival on July 15, 2016. This was a completely random capture with my iPhone 6s Plus at the peak of a beautiful sunset. It was captured at the intersection of Center and Main Streets in Galax, VA.

Chapters Snow

Chapters Snow

A photo of Chapters Book Store that I captured while walking around in the snow storm in the early morning hours of January 22, 2016. I had woken up early to try and get some photos of town in the snow before too much traffic came through. It was cold and peaceful and a wonderful time.

Oldtown and Main

Oldtown and Main

This photo was taken on a crisp autumn day at the intersection of Oldtown and Main Streets in Galax, VA on October 11, 2015. It is a panoramic shot with good elements of contrast with the shadows. It was taken on a Sunday with little traffic. It's one of my favorite views of town taken from the corner of the old People's Drug building.

Downtown Panoramas

I used my iPhone 4s to take a panoramic photo of my building showing both sides of Main Street in Galax on October 7, 2012. It got me to thinking about taking some other panoramic photos around town, and I found my opportunity a couple of weeks later on October 21, 2012. Both days were on a Sunday with little traffic and I loved the long shadows at sunset.

Jan 17, 2013 Snow at Night

Some night shots from January 17, 2013 of the snow that night. The amount was significant and the view is of downtown Galax from my bedroom window. These were taken with my iPhone 4s and I had to open the window and hang out to get them.

First Friday

First Friday

This is a composite panoramic of about 20 photographs taken on November 6, 2015. Each photograph is a 30 second exposure on a remarkably warm night in November. I loved the way the Rex Theater was lit up and you can actually see my wife Michele and our 6 month old son strolling in front of Chapters Bookstore.

Andromeda, The Seven Sisters and The Mist

One of my favorite astrophotography works that I’ve done, this photo is actually a two photo panoramic composite. It is taken from Vine St. in Galax looking back towards the Pipers Gap area. Aside from the fog lying beyond the trees, it also contains two prominent astronomy icons. The Andromeda Galaxy in the upper center and The Pleiades just above the trees.

Matthews Milky Way

Mattherws Milky Way

This photo was taken on November 14, 2015 at the Judge Matthews house. It was a very cold night, but it made for brighter stars. I particularly liked the old tree in front of the house in this photo. There was just enough traffic on 58 to illuminate the house.

My First Popular Photo

Grayson & Main

This photo was taken on January 17, 2013 with my iPhone 4S. Michele and I have a tradition of eating at the Galax Smokehouse whenever it snows. It allows us to get out in the snow and enjoy the weather instead of having to worry about cooking.

After we had eaten, it was dusk and just barely enough light for a photo. I stepped out the door of the old Bolen's Drug Store and looked south down Main Street. I thought to myself "Oh, that's pretty" and took out my iPhone. Without even thinking about it, I snapped the photo and eventually uploaded it to Facebook.

The reaction I received was HUGE! I had folks commenting on past memories of Galax and their love for their hometown. The City of Galax used it for their cover photo and it received over 800 shares. It is also what turned my mind spinning about documenting out little town. Living downtown, there are so many things I see daily that are nostalgic that I began to take more photos of downtown to share with locals as well as folks from Galax who no longer live here.
